2025 Ranking: Which Australian State Has the Dirtiest Tap Water?

By Health News Australia

Last updated: July 2025

Discover Your Solution

Australian families are uncovering alarming truths about their tap water. Across every state in 2025, harmful contaminants like lead, PFAS, nitrates, and disinfection by-products have been detected, often exceeding safe levels.

Government trust is fading as more violations and water scares emerge.

This report breaks down the latest state-by-state findings, from school lead exposures to infrastructure failures, and finally, ranking each state from worst to best water quality (Spoiler: even “best” isn’t perfect – and the “worst” will alarm you.)

Families—especially parents—deserve to know if their water is quietly endangering their children’s health. Children are up to 20x more sensitive to toxic exposure than adults, with still-developing bodies that can’t detox properly, putting them at the highest risk.

What You'll Discover:

  • Which Australian states have the most contaminated tap water in 2025.
  • Specific threats affecting your local water supply.
  • How your state compares against national water safety guidelines.
  • The guaranteed method to protect your family's health.
Title

Our Methodology

Tap water quality varies widely across Australia, and there's no single national ranking of the "worst" states. To create this report, we analysed the most recent (2024–2025) data from state and territory health departments, independent water audits, peer-reviewed studies, and reputable news sources.

Our findings focus on:

  • The number and type of contaminants detected
  • Publicly reported water quality breaches
  • And overall risk factors impacting health and safety

Regardless of your state’s ranking, contaminants like chlorine byproducts, heavy metals, PFAS, and microplastics are showing up across the country. That’s why filtering your tap water is no longer optional — it’s essential.

Australia’s Tap Water Rankings (Dirtiest to Cleanest – 2025)

Based on 2024–2025 data on violations, chemical exposure, and public trust, here’s how each state and territory ranks when it comes to protecting your family from what’s really in your water.

1. Northern Territory (NT) – Most Dangerous Water in the Country

  • Remote communities exposed to uranium, nitrates, and bacteria in their only water supply.
  • Families forced into legal battles just to secure basic water safety.
  • Urban areas fare better, but the NT’s water equity record is the worst in Australia.

2. Western Australia (WA) – Toxic Outback, Hidden Chemical Threats

  • Nitrate and uranium contamination plagues dozens of remote WA towns.
  • PFAS from mining and defence bases is spreading toward residential areas.
  • Perth water is clean — but regional WA drags the state into second-worst overall.

3. Queensland (QLD) – Trust Broken, Taps in Doubt

  • 111 boil alerts in 3 years point to collapsing rural infrastructure.
  • PFAS contamination in Brisbane’s water was kept quiet until exposed by journalists.
  • While metro areas are decent, widespread distrust and fragility put QLD near the bottom.

4. South Australia (SA) – Legally Compliant, But Undrinkable for Many

  • 26 towns breached safe levels for carcinogenic THMs in one year.
  • Extreme hardness, salt, and foul taste drive families to avoid tap water altogether.
  • Still struggling with trust issues despite some improvements.

5. Tasmania (TAS) – A Turnaround Story with Lingering Shadows

  • Massive upgrades now ensure all towns have treated, potable water.
  • But the memory of boil alerts, lead, and mining runoff still runs deep.
  • A solid mid-ranking — safer today, but scars of the past remain.

6. New South Wales (NSW) – City Strength, Regional Weakness

  • PFAS detected in Sydney’s supply, lead found in a school’s drinking fountains.
  • Numerous boil advisories in rural towns and aging infrastructure concerns.
  • Sydney water is mostly clean, but the statewide picture is patchy at best.

7. Victoria (VIC) – Reliable, but Not Untouchable

  • Strong compliance, quick response to E. coli alerts, and robust urban infrastructure.
  • Occasional issues (e.g. storm-driven turbidity, regional lead scares), but no major crisis.
  • Public confidence is high — VIC ranks near the top.

8. Australian Capital Territory (ACT) – Gold Standard for Water Safety

  • 100% compliance, no health violations, and zero boil orders.
  • Proactive PFAS testing, transparent public reporting, and protected catchments.
  • Canberra sets the national benchmark for clean, safe, and trusted water.

Stop Drinking Chemicals Before It’s Too Late

No matter where your state ranks, the truth is the same: dangerous contaminants like PFAS, lead, and microplastics are in tap water across Australia — even in the so-called ‘cleanest’ areas.

And what's worse, many people rely on ineffective and outdated solutions...

❌ Jug Filters

“Most jugs improve taste, not safety. Unless a filter is certified to NSF/ANSI 53 (lead/health contaminants) and explicitly PFAS-certified, it won’t address the real threats. And many household standard jug media aren’t certified for nanoplastics.” - World Health Organisation

❌ Bottled Water

“Bottled water isn’t a safe shortcut. Multiple reviews and new lab techniques show it can contain hundreds of thousands of plastic fragments per litre—often higher than tap.” - World Health Organisation

❌ Boiling

“Boiling is for germs, not chemicals. It won’t remove lead and doesn’t remove PFAS—and it doesn’t reliably remove microplastics.” - World Health Organization

Question *

Does PuraHome remove fluoride from tap water?

The PuraHome filter uses the same advanced design as a third-party tested model proven to reduce chlorine, heavy metals, microplastics, and other common tap water contaminants.

It helps reduce fluoride levels, but does not remove fluoride entirely. Due to its high solubility in water, complete fluoride removal typically requires a reverse osmosis (RO) system. While RO systems are effective, they also remove essential minerals like calcium and magnesium — and waste a significant amount of water.

PuraHome offers a more balanced, sustainable approach by filtering out harmful substances while retaining beneficial minerals. For those who require full fluoride elimination, an RO system may be needed, though it’s often less practical for everyday use.

The filter is not certified for microbiological (bacteria/parasite) removal, and results may vary depending on your local water quality.

How do I clean my PuraHome filter?

Title

To maintain filtration efficiency and extend the life of your PuraHome filter, periodic cleaning is recommended using the sandpaper method:

  1. Remove the filter from the unit and rinse it under cold running water.
  2. Using the fine-grit sandpaper provided, gently scrub the surface of the filter to remove any accumulated impurities.
    3. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling the filter.

Cleaning the filter helps maintain consistent water flow and prolongs its lifespan, ensuring continued protection against contaminants.

Can PuraHome filter hot water?

Title

No, PuraHome is designed for cold and room temperature water only. Using hot water with the filter can reduce its effectiveness and potentially shorten the lifespan of the filtration system.

To maintain optimal performance, ensure that only cold or lukewarm water is used with the unit. If you are using hot water, make sure you set it to the tap water setting.

Does PuraHome affect water pressure?

Title

The PuraHome filter is designed to maintain strong and steady water flow while efficiently removing contaminants.

If you notice a reduction in water pressure, it may be an indication that the filter requires cleaning or replacement. Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and uninterrupted filtration.

How often do filters need replacing?

It has been recommended by healthcare professionals to replace the filter cartridge every 3 months

Our in house produced filters are Long-Lasting due to their quality, reducing the need for frequent filter replacements, saving you money.

Will it fit on my tap?

Title

PuraHome fits 98% of taps with round-tipped aerators. All necessary tools and adapters are included. If the provided adapters don't fit your faucet, contact us with a photo of your faucet, and we will send additional adapters at no cost.

PuraHome Filters will NOT fit taps that are square shaped, pull out, hand-held, spray-style, or faucets with a sensor.

Has PuraHome been tested?

Title

Performance claims are based on third party lab testing of the OKON JK-A1 model, which uses the same design and filter media. Our product is rebranded, but functionally idential

PuraHome promises both you and your family safe, healthy and clean drinking water.

What makes PuraHome the best tap filter on the market?

Title

PuraHome sets a new standard in home water filtration with advanced 5-stage technology — based on third-party testing of the same design shown to reduce over 100 contaminants.
Unlike many competitors, our filter combines luxury design, superior durability, and effortless 60-second installation, with universal compatibility to fit nearly every tap.

Proudly Aussie-operated, PuraHome delivers cleaner, safer water straight from the tap — helping minimise your family's daily exposure to chlorine, heavy metals, microplastics, and other harmful substances often found in unfiltered tap water.

Performance may vary depending on water quality
